BS6-compliant Jawa and Jawa 42 motorcycles to retain 293cc engine
Jawa Motorcycles has confirmed that the BS6-compliant models of the Jawa and Jawa 42 motorcycles will continue to be powered by the same 293cc engine that is available on the existing BS4 models. The announcement has quashed the rumors that claimed the emission-friendly models would come with a more powerful 334cc BS6-compliant motor offered on the recently launched Jawa Perak.
All about BS6 norms
In an attempt to curb pollution, the Indian government has made it mandatory for the automakers to upgrade their vehicles with Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms before April 2020. The BS6 norms are emission standards for fuel combustion engines to emit less carbon monoxide, low sulphur content, and other toxic gases. This results in cleaner combustion that helps in reducing air pollution.
Meanwhile, here's recalling the Jawa, Jawa 42 motorcycles
As far as their specifications are concerned, these bikes feature a retro-styled design with rounded headlamps and mirrors, dual exhausts, and spoked wheels. The standard Jawa has a more classic appeal, thanks to the chrome treatment on the fuel tank and mirrors. Meanwhile, the Jawa 42 gets a modern touch in the form of blacked-out matte-finished mirrors and a new digital-analog instrument console.
Power and performance
As mentioned earlier, the company has confirmed that the BS6 models will be powered by a 293cc liquid-cooled engine. However, the power figures of the upgraded engine are not known as of now. For reference, the existing BS4 unit churns out 27bhp of maximum power and 28Nm of peak torque. The transmission duties on the motorcycles are handled by a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Jawa, Jawa 42: On the road
In the safety department, both Jawa and Jawa 42 motorcycles come equipped with disc brakes on both wheels along with dual-channel ABS for improved road handling. The motorcycles house telescopic hydraulic forks on the front along with gas-charged hydraulic dual shock absorbers on the rear to handle the suspension duties.
And, what about pricing?
Presently, the Jawa and Jawa 42 motorcycles are priced at Rs. 1.64 lakh and 1.55 lakh, respectively. There is no word on the pricing of their respective BS6 models yet, but we expect them to come at a little premium over the outgoing variants.
