Want to install dashcam in your car? Follow these steps
What's the story
Dashcams, or dashboard cameras, have gained immense popularity among car owners in India for their ability to make driving safer and keep an eye on the surroundings.
These devices can potentially save money on car insurance and prove your innocence in case of an accident.
While there are plenty of dashcam options available in the market, installation is not that tough and can be done by the owner or driver themselves.
Charging
Charge the dashcam battery if necessary
Before installation, it's important to check if the dashcam comes with an internal battery. If it does, you'll have to charge it before installation.
After installation, if required, you can charge the battery using the car's 12V socket.
However, as this power source shuts off when the engine is off, the internal battery keeps the dashcam running and powers motion sensors during stationary mode.
Positioning
Locate the ideal position for installation
The placement of the dashcam is critical for its proper functioning.
Ideally, it should be placed within arm's reach of the driver or front passenger, without blocking the driver's view of the road ahead.
A popular spot for installation is right under or just ahead of the rear-view mirror.
The mount typically features a suction cup that can be stuck on either the windshield or dashboard, ensuring it doesn't obstruct the view.
Cable check
Verify cable length
Before you mount the dashcam, check the length of its power cable. It should reach the 12V socket after being organized and routed around the window.
Avoid a straight drop from the dashcam as it can create an untidy appearance around the center console.
Many dashcams come with USB cables, but remember, your car's USB port is not for powering a device like that; instead, use the 12V port.
Installation
Route, clip and conceal cable
Dashcams usually include adhesive clips for routing the cable off the windshield.
It is important to route the cable in a manner that it remains hidden from sight and within the vehicle's upholstery.
Once that's done, the dashcam can be mounted on either the dashboard or windshield.
This not only makes everything look neat but also ensures the optimal functioning of the device.
