Ford recalls Mustang again because it botched the earlier recall
What's the story
Ford has recalled a limited number of its Mustang cars from the 2022-2023 model years.
The recall stems from an error in a previous repair process, where technicians did not install the correct power steering control module (PSCM) software.
Ford discovered this oversight when it found that these vehicles were recorded as repaired, but did not have the necessary update installed.
Original recall
Initial recall involved over 30,000 Mustangs
The first recall, which happened last year, affected more than 30,000 Mustangs.
The problem was associated with improperly calibrated steering gears, which could lead to the steering wheel oscillating when the driver tried turning.
It was limited to this generation of Mustangs using electronic steering systems.
Potential risk
Software error could lead to loss of vehicle control
The first calibration of the steering gear's secondary digital torque sensor was performed with inverted polarity.
Without the right software update, the problem remains and could lead to issues if the primary steering torque sensor fails or is defective.
Ford hasn't detailed how severe these oscillations could be but said in their recall report that "unintended steering assist could lead to loss of vehicle control while driving, increasing the risk of a crash."
Recall procedure
Ford to offer free software update for affected Mustangs
Owners of the affected Mustang models will have to take their vehicles to a dealer. There, a service technician will install the correct PSCM software free of charge.
Ford plans to start notifying owners about this issue on March 31.
The company has said that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem so far.
Recall statistics
Ford leads industry in recalls this year
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford has issued 10 recalls this year alone. This puts the automaker at the forefront of the industry when it comes to recalls.
Last year, Ford was ranked as the third-most recalled brand with 67 recalls affecting 4.8 million cars.
CEO Jim Farley has said he intends to tackle these quality issues within the company.
