Ford recalls over 240,000 SUVs over seatbelt issues
What's the story
Ford Motor has recalled more than 240,000 SUVs over the risk of potentially insecure seatbelts.
According to the recall notice, the seatbelt anchor bolts in the affected vehicles may not have been properly secured during assembly.
The issue mainly affects the 2020-2021 models of both Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator.
Cause investigation
Uncertainty surrounds cause of seatbelt issue
The exact cause of the insecure bolts remains unclear.
Ford believes the supplier "may have performed undocumented rework of seats outside of standard operating procedure," according to the recall report.
Signs of the issue could include a squeaking or rattling sound from the seatbelt anchor and anchor retractor bolts in the affected vehicles.
Recall decision
Ford's response to seatbelt issue
Ford first learned about the seatbelt issue on November 5 and launched an official investigation on December 10.
Upon visiting the supplier and reviewing records, the company opted to recall Explorers and Aviators manufactured between October 2018 and June 2020.
The improperly secured bolts could potentially fail to restrain a passenger during an accident, thereby increasing their risk of injury or worse.
Safety record
No accidents or injuries reported yet
Despite the potential risk posed by these improperly secured bolts, Ford has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue.
The company is aware of four warranty claims concerning loose or missing anchor bolts.
It has also received one complaint from Transport Canada, the agency that oversees the transportation industry in the country.
