Ford Ranger pick-up truck spotted in India, launch likely
The Ford Ranger pick-up truck has been sighted once again in India, reigniting speculations about Ford's potential comeback to the Indian market. The vehicle was first seen in Chennai. According to current plans, the Everest (Endeavor) is slated to be the first SUV launched by Ford in its second innings in India, with the Ranger possibly following suit. Both vehicles share a common set of underpinnings as well as powertrain.
What about Ford's Indian strategy?
Ford is expected to primarily focus on electric vehicles (EVs) for the Indian market. All cars are likely to be sold as Completely Built-Up (CBU) units. However, Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) models like the Everest and Ranger are anticipated to significantly contribute to sales volume. This strategy suggests a balanced approach between embracing new technology and maintaining traditional models in its lineup.
A look inside and out
The Ranger, essentially a pick-up variant of the Everest SUV, boasts a familiar front fascia with goodies like C-shaped LED DRLs and a large front grille. It features unique door panels and fender shared with Everest, but with more prominent wheel arches, integrated side-steppers on both sides, and a new pick-up-specific tailgate. Inside, it offers a vertically oriented infotainment panel, a fully digital instrument cluster, vertical AC vents, and the rugged layout from Everest.
Two engine choices are available
The Ranger shares its powertrain with the Everest, including 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engines. The entry-level 2.0-liter diesel mill produces 170hp, while the bi-turbo unit delivers 206hp. The top-of-the-line 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel unit offers 246hp and 600Nm of torque, all paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. It also comes loaded with technology such as ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, wireless charging, automatic HVAC, and powered driver seat, among others.
