Ford files patent for retractable frunk screen in future EVs
Ford has applied for a patent for a retractable screen designed specifically for the front trunk cargo area, or 'frunk,' of its forthcoming electric vehicles (EVs). The patent outlines that the screen will be placed in a dedicated compartment at the rear of the frunk. This innovative feature, similar to an F-150 Lightning setup, includes a projector that will be mounted on the underside of the vehicle's front grille.
Usage of the retractable screen
The retractable screen, as described in the patent application, is designed for entertainment purposes during activities such as camping trips and 'tailgate' parties. This innovative feature is not Ford's first venture into unique screen designs. Previous patents from the company have showcased concepts for mounting displays, including screens hanging from an open bootlid, and rising from a slot within the frunk.
Ford's commitment to enhancing EV user experience
Ford's patent filings indicate a commitment to improving user experience in its future EV models like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning. The company has explored party-focused patents for its cars, such as a fold-out table as well as a Bluetooth-connected speaker. Additionally, Ford has patented a frunk with work-related facilities like a pegboard for tools. These innovations suggest that these patented features may be incorporated into future models.
Ford's shift in European strategy
Ford has confirmed a change in its European strategy due to slowed EV adoption in the region. The company stated, "As EV adoption in Europe has slowed, we believe we need to offer our customers ICE (internal combustion engine) and hybrid vehicle options beyond 2030." This marks a departure from Ford's 2021 plan for an all-EV lineup in Europe by the end of the decade. The firm is closely monitoring the situation and will adjust its plans as necessary.
