BMW unveils 'superbrain' that will power its next-generation EVs

BMW has unveiled its latest innovation, the "Heart of Joy" powertrain control unit.
This cutting-edge supercomputer will power the Neue Klasse series of electric vehicles (EVs) slated to launch this year.
It is a one-of-a-kind control module that combines all vehicle functions into one. These include motor systems, braking, charging, regenerative braking, and steering.
The "superbrain" processes inputs 10 times faster than the individual systems in its current EV line-up, as per BMW.

The "Heart of Joy" is an engine control unit (ECU) that integrates driving dynamics and powertrain control into a single computer.
This small module, which is about eight-inches by eight-inches in size, will offer more responsive and smoother handling of acceleration, motor braking, steering, and vehicle dynamics.
Instead of putting together hundreds of off-the-shelf components like most manufacturers, BMW created this module in-house with its own engineers writing software code for seamless communication between all components.

Neue Klasse EVs to feature 4 control modules
The "Heart of Joy" will be one of four total control modules in the Neue Klasse EVs.
These cars are being produced at BMW's plant in Debrecen, Hungary.
The first model from this new class is expected to be an electric crossover, tipped as the successor to the iX3 sold in Europe and China.
It will be followed by an i3 sedan in 2026, similar to the 3-Series.
Test drive
BMW's VDX test rig showcases 'Heart of Joy' capabilities
To showcase the power of the "Heart of Joy," BMW employed a stripped-down, camouflaged prototype core called Vision Driving Experience (VDX) test rig.
The car was driven by Jens Klingmann, a German racer who has won consecutive races for BMW at the Italian GT Championship.
The VDX features massive 21-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and produces a staggering torque of up to 17,993Nm.
