Buying safer cars in India has now become easier
The Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) has introduced an initiative, aimed at enhancing consumer awareness about vehicle safety in India. This program involves the use of a sticker on vehicles, that have undergone testing under the Bharat NCAP program. The label will indicate the safety rating of the car, as determined by this voluntary program for passenger vehicle manufacturers.
A guide for consumers
The safety rating labels are designed to serve as an immediate reference for buyers, allowing them to easily assess a vehicle's safety level before purchase. Each label will flaunt a QR code that, when scanned, offers a detailed report of the vehicle's crash test results. The labels will be provided to all Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for cars that have undergone testing under the Bharat NCAP program.
What information will the labels provide?
The labels flaunt the Bharat NCAP logo, a QR code, the automaker's name, the model of the car, the date of testing, and safety ratings for both child as well as adult occupants. This comprehensive information is intended to empower consumers with knowledge about vehicle safety.
Bharat NCAP's track record and future plans
The Bharat NCAP program was launched by the Indian government in October 2023, and has since evaluated multiple cars including Tata Harrier, Safari, Punch.ev and Nexon.ev. All models evaluated so far have secured a full five-star rating. The program is also tipped to release results for Maruti Suzuki cars in the near future, as pictures of the Grand Vitara undergoing safety tests have surfaced online.
