Mercedes-Benz EQS's 949km on one charge sets Guinness World Record
Autocar India and Mercedes-Benz India have set a new Guinness World Record, for the longest distance covered by an electric vehicle (EV) on a single charge. The record-breaking journey spanned 949km, from Bengaluru to Navi Mumbai, in a Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 without recharging. This feat surpasses the earlier record of 916.74km, set in the UK by a Ford Mustang Mach E.
Mercedes-Benz EQS 580: The vehicle behind the record
The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 was chosen for this record attempt due to its impressive features. The car is powered by a substantial 107.8kWh battery pack, which provides it with the highest certified range in the market at 857km as per ARAI. Also, its drag coefficient of just 0.20 makes it India's most aerodynamically efficient car, further enhancing its range capabilities.
Challenging conditions and obstacles during the run
The record-setting journey was not without its challenges. It took place during the monsoon season, with heavy rainfall and roadwork along the route, creating diversions and detours. A puncture in the closing stages of the drive added to these difficulties but was swiftly resolved, allowing for the continuation of this historic run.
Autocar's Rahul Kakar on the record-breaking journey
Rahul Kakar from Autocar India, who piloted the EQS during this record-setting drive, described it as his most challenging test yet. He highlighted factors such as heavy rainfall, traffic, broken roads and a flat tire that made the journey particularly demanding. Despite these obstacles, he successfully navigated the EV to set a new world record for distance covered on a single charge.
Autocar India and Mercedes-Benz India celebrate their achievement
Autocar India's Editor, Hormazd Sorabjee, expressed his delight at celebrating their 25th anniversary with a Guinness World Record title. He praised the EQS for its range and efficient aerodynamic shape that helped them overcome all obstacles during this challenging drive. Santosh Iyer, CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, also congratulated the team on their achievement under difficult driving conditions.
