General Motors recalls 4.5L trucks, SUVs over brake warning flaw
General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for approximately 450,000 pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the US. The recall was necessitated over a potential flaw in the electronic brake control module software. This defect could prevent the system from alerting drivers about a loss of brake fluid through a warning light, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Models affected by the recall
The recall affects several models including the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and the 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe. Other impacted models are Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade as well as Escalade ESV.
Brake warning system flaw increases crash risk
The NHTSA has identified that the electronic brake control module software in these vehicles, may not activate a warning light when there is a loss of brake fluid. This oversight could lead to drivers operating their vehicles with low brake fluid levels, potentially compromising braking performance and increasing the risk of accidents.
GM to provide free software update
To address this issue, GM dealers will provide a free over-the-air update to rectify the error in the electronic brake control module software. The NHTSA has confirmed that this update will be made available to all affected vehicle owners. Notification letters regarding the recall and necessary steps for the software update, are expected to be mailed out by October 28.
