Alpine gears up to launch hydrogen V6 road car
Alpine, Renault's performance division, is set to introduce a hydrogen road car with a V6 engine. The French brand is simultaneously investing in fully electric vehicles (EVs), and exploring the potential of internal combustion engines (ICE) models powered by hydrogen. Antony Villain, Alpine's design boss, confirmed that the Alpenglow concept car was developed with a production model in mind.
Alpenglow concept car: A step toward hydrogen power
The Alpenglow concept car features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine, but Alpine is currently developing a more powerful V6 mill. This new powertrain is expected to surpass the 340hp offered by the four-cylinder model. Villain hinted at the possibility of incorporating this larger engine into a limited series of street-legal models, stating, "Why not? Why not have that on the roads?"
Renault's commitment to high-performance vehicles
The Alpenglow is an evolution of a 2022 concept, symbolizing Renault's dedication to high-performance vehicles. Despite initial setbacks during its first test in Belgium due to an electrical issue, plans for the sports car remain on track. The current LMP3 chassis from Ligier will be replaced later this year with the new V6 engine.
Renault's future lineup: Electric and potentially hydrogen
Renault CEO Luca de Meo hinted at the possibility of putting the Alpenglow into production during last week's Annual General Meeting. He revealed that while the A110 model will not be on sale for much longer, Renault plans to expand its lineup to seven models, potentially including hydrogen-engine cars. De Meo stated their portfolio will be "100-percent electric and maybe, potentially, hydrogen-engine cars."
