Alpine reveals Alpenglow Hy4 hydrogen-powered sports car concept: Check features
Renault's performance brand, Alpine, has recently introduced a proof of concept sports car named the Alpenglow Hy4. This innovative vehicle uses a hydrogen combustion turbo engine, reflecting the automaker's faith in hydrogen as a viable fuel source for internal combustion engines (ICE). The Hy4 is an advanced version of the 2022 Alpenglow concept, and boasts a running prototype.
Details of the hydrogen-powered Alpenglow Hy4
The Alpenglow Hy4 is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that delivers 340hp. This four-cylinder engine, capable of revving up to 7,000rpm, is powered by three hydrogen tanks. Each tank holds 2.09kg of hydrogen at a pressure of 700bar. The power generated by this mill is transferred to the road via a sequential transmission system.
Alpine's future plans for hydrogen-powered vehicles
Alpine is currently developing a larger, in-house V6 engine specifically designed for hydrogen applications. A subsequent variant of the Alpenglow, potentially named the Hy6, is expected to premiere in late 2024. Meanwhile, the Hy4 is set to make its track debut, and will be publicly unveiled during the FIA WEC 2024 season's six-hour endurance race at Spa-Francorchamps.
Design modifications in the Alpenglow Hy4
The design of the Hy4 has been altered from its original Alpenglow concept, to fit a two-seat cabin and embed the hydrogen tanks into side pods. The car has been made slightly taller and features a reworked aerodynamic package, highlighted by a new roof scoop. These modifications have been made while keeping in mind, Alpine's vision for this powertrain technology's potential application in street-legal models.
