2022 Lexus NX 350h review: Should you buy it?
What's the story
Lexus has been flying the flag for strong hybrid cars in India and is the only luxury automaker to offer them.
Globally, the NX is one of the best-selling models within the Lexus portfolio and this is also a crucial launch for the Indian market.
The Lexus NX 350h is based on a new platform and has an overhauled cabin.
Here's our review.
Context
Why does this story matter?
While the current focus is solely on EVs, hybrid cars make a lot of sense considering our market requirements.
Strong hybrid cars with "self-charging technology" eliminate range anxiety yet offer high fuel efficiency along with being environmentally friendly.
Lexus hopes to create a niche for itself in the market with its hybrid SUV range starting with the NX and the RX.
Exteriors
The car looks aggressive with sharp design details
The new Lexus NX 350h follows the design template of its predecessor albeit while having a more aggressive approach.
The new-generation model is also longer and wider while having a new version of the "Spindle grille" along with L-shaped DRLs and slim LED headlamps.
Elsewhere, massive 20-inch alloy wheels and all-new LED taillamps connected to a light bar add to the sporty stance.
Interiors
The cabin uses high quality materials
The interiors offer a premium ambiance with high-quality materials. Compared to similarly priced SUVs, the interior of the NX 350h feels more plush and better finished.
Lexus has reduced the button clutter from the previous version while also moving the infotainment controls to a large touchscreen.
In terms of space, the SUV has a relatively commodious rear seat with ample legroom.
Features
From head-up display to 360-degree-view camera
The biggest highlight of the cabin is the massive 14.0-inch infotainment console, which comes with a responsive touch display.
Other features include a digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree-view camera, 64 color ambient lighting, a customizable head-up display, and electric door handles.
You also get a premium 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, electrically folding rear seats, and a suite of driver assistance safety features.
Performance
The hybrid powertrain is smooth and refined
The new NX 350h has a hybrid powertrain, which includes a combination of a 2.5-liter petrol engine and two electric motors. The total output is 243hp while a 6-step eCVT gearbox is standard.
You get a selection of different drive modes and that changes the throttle response.
We found the driving experience to be smooth with ample power on offer along with excellent refinement.
Ride quality
The car has an absorbent suspension
Compared to the previous model, the ride quality and handling have been drastically improved.
The body roll is reduced and the suspension is absorbent in the way it tackled broken roads. At high speeds, the NX 350h felt stable and more sure-footed along with a sharper steering response.
The hybrid powertrain will provide an enhanced fuel efficiency figure in the region of 14-15km/l.
Our verdict
Is it worth your money?
The 2022 Lexus NX 350h is priced at Rs. 64.9 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Luxury variant tested here costs Rs. 69.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
We feel the new NX 350h is easily one of the most desirable premium SUVs due to its luxurious interior and long equipment list.
The hybrid powertrain further makes it a logical choice over other rivals.
