German automaker Volkswagen has taken the covers off its latest hatchback, the 2020 Golf. The new model comes loaded with a bunch of hi-tech features and is available in five hybrid powertrains. Notably, the company is expected to launch the hatchback in global markets sometime in December this year. Here is everything about it.
2020 Volkswagen Golf: At a glance
The 2020 Volkswagen Golf comes with a compact look featuring a single-slat sharp looking grille, a revamped front bumper with sculpted lines, and chrome garnishing on the rear bumper. The hatchback also gets indicator-mounted ORVMs, blacked-out B-pillars, roof-mounted shark-fin antenna, and body-colored roof spoiler. For lighting, the car houses LED headlamps with DRLs, turn indicators, and LED taillights.
Inside the cabin
Inside, the 8th-generation Golf comes with a 5-seater cabin featuring a panoramic sunroof and a three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel with chrome accents. As for electronic features, it houses a 10.25-inch fully-digital instrument panel and an 8.25-inch infotainment system, along with a 10-inch infotainment screen and a windscreen head-up display as optional.
The car also comes with eSIM support
The 2020 Golf comes with eSIM support through which it is permanently connected to the internet and enables online music streaming and traffic information. It is also Volkswagen's first car that comes with Car2X technology for enhanced safety. Interestingly, select Samsung smartphones can also be used as vehicle's key, and using them you can start the car by putting the phone on center console.
Power and performance
The 2020 Golf is available in three engine options: a 2.0-liter diesel as well as 1.0-liter and 1.5-liter petrol. The 1.5-liter petrol and 2.0-liter diesel units, available in two states of tune, are capable of producing 114bhp or 148bhp of power. On the other hand, the smaller 1.0-liter petrol mill, also available in two states of tune, makes 89bhp or 109bhp of maximum power.
Here's a look at the hybrid powertrains
The 2020 Golf also gets five hybrid powertrain options. Out of them, there are three mild-hybrid versions with a 48V lithium-ion battery, mated to a TSI petrol engine, and two plug-in hybrids with 13kWh battery. The mild hybrid units churn out 109bhp, 129bhp, and 148bhp of power, while the plug-in hybrids produce 201bhp and 241bhp of maximum power.
And, will it come to India?
Going by the reports, the 2020 Golf is unlikely to arrive at Indian shores. However, the German automaker may introduce its sibling, Golf GTI, in India as a completely built unit (CBU) sometime next year.
